Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (22 August 2019)
Continuing on the success of the first half of the year, the Cayman Islands welcomed a total of 51,590 stayover visitors in July, an increase of 9.57 percent over July 2018. July’s contribution marks the highest number of stayover arrivals for the first seven months of any year in recorded history and brings the total stayover visitation for the year to 332,294, an increase of 10.76 percent over 2018.
“Summer always presents the opportunity to showcase the array of family-friendly options available and I am pleased that our visitors made the Cayman Islands their destination of choice,” commented Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism, the Honourable Moses Kirkconnell. “July’s contributions mark the best summer month in recorded history and is a testament to the destination’s overall strength in attracting first-time visitors, while also maintaining repeat visitation. This visitation positively impacts our local economy, with preliminary estimates showing total visitor spend from January to July at approximately US$608 million.”
Growth in travel during the summer months was positively impacted by additional airlift that was not available in July 2018. American Airlines’ seasonal service from Chicago contributed 18 new flights to the destination and the airline increased capacity from Charlotte, North Carolina. Southwest’s new service from Baltimore/Washington contributed four flights to the destination and the airline increased frequency from Houston with three additional flights. JetBlue’s new service from Fort Lauderdale, Florida added 31 flights and Air Canada increased frequency from Toronto with four additional flights. Cayman Airways increased frequency from both New York and Denver with nine additional flights from each city and continues to be the top choice for Denver residents visiting the destination.
As summer comes to an end, the Department of Tourism will roll out its annual “Fall Only in Cayman” promotion. This year the promotion focuses on the total immersion in active living and wellness available in the destination that stretches beyond our sand and sea. Visitors will be able to book experiences ranging from organic and healthy dining options, fitness classes, spa treatments and more that warrant multiple days of indulgence, with the bonus of 30 percent off or the 5
